An area of wildflowers is both appealing to the eye and beneficial to countless key pollinating insects. Including a wildflower area into a disused corner in your garden can help provide a home for wildlife, even in urban settings. wildflower seed mixtures can be sown throughout the year but to get the very best results we recommend sowing them in the autumn. It is important to know exactly what type of mixture you have and before sowing and plan accordingly as some wildflowers can be sown in the spring for a summer display (see our Cornfield Annuals Wildflower Mixture)

Straight annual wildflower seed species such as cornflower, common poppy and corn camomile should be sown in the early spring, March until early May. Where possibleĀ  into moist soil. Smaller areas should be watered daily to help with germination this ensures a good summer flowering period.

Larger wildflower seed mixtures, including annual wildflower seeds, should be treated the same way with mixtures being sown from March onwards. Perennial wildflower mixtures on the other hand seem to benefit from an autumn sowing as species in these mixtures, our General Purpose wildflower mixture for example, often require periods of cold weather to break their dormancy and initiate germination. This mixture will flower often in the mid summer and continue to do so until around late September. Cornfield annuals on the other hand tend to flower from late may to early July.
